Assalamualaikum dear Launchgooders!
The kingdom of Malaysia has welcomed refugees from all over the world; despite finding safety, many struggle daily to secure their basic needs. Among them are over 50 Somalian refugee women, some of whom are upbringing orphans and live under harsh circumstances.
The challenges faced by this community of Somali women and children are pressing, requiring prompt assistance to prevent dire consequences. Without timely support, these women may be forced into working double shifts, significantly increasing their risk of exposure. Being UN card holders, they are prohibited from working in the country, leaving them susceptible to potential discovery by authorities and subsequent deportation to their devastated home countries at any moment. It is imperative that we act swiftly to provide them with the necessary support.
On a daily basis, these Somali women and children encounter various hardships, including securing food and basic living amenities, accessing essential resources, providing their children with school supplies and appropriate clothing, and coping with the challenges posed by a rising cost of living. Addressing these issues is crucial to ensuring the well-being of this vulnerable community.
Allaah S.W.T says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Worship Allaah and join none with Him (in worship), and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, Al-Masaakeen (the poor), the neighbour who is near to kin, the neighbour who is a stranger, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (you meet), and those (slaves) whom your right hands possess. “Verily, Allaah does not like such as are proud and boastful.” – [al-Nisa’ 4:36]
The only job available to these Somalian refugees is to work as house cleaners. In addition to working informally, they can only get a maximum of four jobs per week and only earn around RM95 for a full day’s work. They lack health insurance, retirement plans, and work contracts. Their basic needs far outweigh their income. Many of these women are raising three to four children, and they must also pay rent, utilities, transportation, and school fees. As the Muslim Ummah, we are responsible for helping our brothers and sisters in need.
